Skate park and pump track

The idea of creating a skate park and pump track is to diversify recreational opportunities by creating an exciting facility for people of all ages, abilities and skill levels, which fosters healthy activity, and which strengthens social cohesion. The project will transform an area of waste ground into a dynamic facility with potential for further development. The skate park will be suitable for wheelchair users, as well as skateboards and rollerskates. The pump track will encircle the skatepark and develop off-road cycling skills and general fitness.

Locally, informal community feedback indicates a demand for new recreational opportunities, particularly those appealing to young people and families. Physical inactivity is a growing concern, with direct implications for physical and mental health. Skateboarding, BMX biking, and pump track riding offer fun, accessible ways to encourage regular movement, coordination, and confidence-building. Well-designed skate parks and pump tracks are inherently inclusive, inviting participation regardless of background, ability, or age. They foster mentorship, peer learning, and positive relationships among users. They are inclusive; a well-designed park can be used by people in wheelchairs, and people with pushchairs.

The park will bring with it a sense of place-making and regeneration. The facility will transform a neglected site into a lively and safe recreational destination. There will be opportunity in the future to accommodated mobile catering and amenity seating, creating a welcoming and inclusive space. The project will be designed to ensure sustainability, low environmental impact, and long-term viability through responsible design and management. There will be opportunities for skill development, competitions, workshops and events.
